Woodpecker - Year 1

Hi, I am Mrs Bradshaw, and I am very excited to be your teacher in Year 1.
I have been lucky enough to be a teacher at St John’s for three years. I love walking, swimming and reading to relax.
Other staff working in our class are:
Ms. Ogle - Teacher on Thursdays
Mrs Buckett - Teacher on Tuesday afternoons
Miss O'Sullivan - Teaching Assistant
Welcome to our Year 1 class page! We are excited to share our learning journey with you this year. Here you will find updates, photos, and news about all the exciting things happening in our classroom. We can’t wait to show you how we learn, explore, and grow together!
Weekly Timetable in Woodpecker Class:

Term 3
In English this term, we will be basing our writing around our topic 'Toys over Time' and learning more about different toys from the past to the present. We will be reading some fiction text, 'Toys in Space,' Toys lost in a Museum', 'That rabbit is Emily Brown' and 'Old Bear'. We will be using our phonic knowledge to read and write words and simple sentences. We will also be focusing on punctuating our writing and adding new, descriptive vocabulary to our sentences.
In Maths we will be learning about place value, addition and subtraction. We will use lots of fun resources, like cubes and counters, to help us add, subtract and compare numbers. We are very excited that we are now starting problem-solving as part of our 'Fantastic Friday'.
In Science we are learning all about Materials. We will be able to identify the different materials and what they are used for. We will ask scientific questions and have the opportunity to take part in scientific investigations, where we will make predictions first, complete a test and then compare results.
In History we are learning about toys in the past and now. We are exploring the differences and similarities in toys over the years. We will visit Canterbury Museum to explore old toys like Bagpuss and Rubert Bear.

In RE this term we will be focusing on 'What is the good news that Jesus brings?' We will explore this by reading Gospel Stories, engaging in role-play and thinking, talking and asking questions about whether Jesus’ ‘good news’ is only good news for Christians.
Highlights of Term 2

Exploring in Science Designing a bedroom for Jesus using instructions

Showing kindness for Mitzvah Day Nativity
Outdoor learning is every alternate Wednesday afternoon, and you will receive a text beforehand so that appropriate clothing can be brought in.
PE is every Tuesday afternoon. Please come to school in your PE Kit.
Be ready for learning! In Woodpecker class, your child will need to have these items in school:
Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2)
-
Book bag (no rucksacks please)
-
PE kit (to be worn on PE day)
-
Water bottle (no squash or juice)
-
Lunchbox (if not having school meal)
-
Wellington boots (to leave school)
-
Coat (weather appropriate)
Please don’t bring other items into school, as we do not have space to store them, and it can cause upset if things are lost or damaged.
School Uniform Checklist:
Please label ALL items of clothing and shoes clearly with your child’s name. This helps even our younger children to take responsibility for and look after their uniform.

Reminders
In the morning, please drop your children off at the gates and leave any important messages with staff on the playground. We start our day's learning as soon as the children arrive, so teachers are not available to speak with parents and carers at the start of the day; after school is best.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!
