We all enjoyed a special assembly yesterday as we welcomed visitors into school to talk to us about the Gypsy and Traveller Communities.
We were joined by the mother and grandmother of Valencia in year 6 and Isobel Whiley (Teacher Adviser for Equality and Inclusion).
They spoke to the children about the gypsy and traveller community and explained a few ways that people choose to live and the different homes that people can have. They spoke about the history of the gypsy community and taught the children a few words in the Romany language.
Year 6 children were then given the opportunity to ask questions to learn more. They were very respectful and thought about the misconceptions that people can have which can lead to discrimination.
The assembly was a great way to learn more about a different culture and for us to celebrate our similarities and differences.
We would like to thank Valencia’s family for coming to talk to us all and for sharing stories of their community.
