We follow a clear progression of skills for History and Geography and link both subjects to our whole school topic and other curriculum subjects (including English and Maths). We use a wide range of enrichment opportunities to bring learning to life and deepen the children’s understanding of the world. We are incredibly lucky at St Johns to be situated in the heart of a historically rich city and have an array of fascinating geographical features on our doorstep; our locality plays a key role in our curriculum.
In History, children develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We encourage children to be curious about the past by asking questions, thinking critically and weighing up evidence in order to draw conclusions and form arguments.
In Geography, children develop their knowledge of their locality, the United Kingdom and our local area. Children learn how to collect and analyse data, interpret sources including maps and diagrams and communicate their findings in a variety of ways.
