Raven - Year 5

Hello! I am Mrs Rayner and I am delighted to be teaching Raven class this year. Here’s a fun fact: ravens are one of the world’s most intelligent and playful birds. They are also shrouded in mystery – how wonderful!

A little about me, I adore teaching! Despite enjoying teaching many subjects, reading, writing and history are my favourites.

I am excited to be leading Writing at St John’s this year. My goal is to show as many children as possible that there is a writer inside us all and to ignite their writing passion. In addition to writing, I am also leading History. It can be so much fun diving into the past and exploring how our ancestors lived.

In my spare time I love to read, take my dogs on a long walk and ride my bike.

Other staff working in our class are:

Miss Barden – Teaching Assistant

Miss Walker – Third Teacher

Our timetable:

Our learning this term:

Our English this term is 'A Place Called Perfect' written by Helena Duggan. This wonderful novel never fails to excite the children! It follows the story of Violet, a young girl who moves with her family to the seemingly perfect town of Perfect. Upon arrival, Violet quickly notices the strange behaviour of the townspeople and the unusual rules that govern the place, including a mysterious eye surveillance system. As she investigates further, Violet discovers that Perfect isn't as idyllic as it seems and that dark secrets are being hidden. With the help of her new friend, Violet uncovers a sinister force controlling the town and its inhabitants. Together, they must find a way to break free from the town's oppressive grip and reveal the truth. Through our writing and reading lessons, we will explore themes of control, conformity, and the importance of questioning authority. As a team, we ask that guardians allow the children to explore the book with their class and not to purchase the book and read ahead - we do not want to spoil the surprise!

Our maths learning this term begins by learning how to compare and order fractions with different denominators, recognising equivalent fractions and using visual aids like number lines. We will then develop strategies for comparing fractions, such as finding a common denominator or converting fractions to decimals. In addition, we will explore adding and subtracting fractions, both with like denominators and unlike denominators. Through our carefully planned reasoning activities, year 5 will learn how to simplify fractions when necessary and solve real-world problems involving fraction operations. Through these units, they will gain a deeper understanding of fractions and their practical applications.

Our Science unit this term is Properties and Changes of Materials where children learn to identify and group materials based on properties like hardness, solubility, and conductivity. We will be exploring physical changes, such as melting and freezing, and chemical changes, like burning or rusting, noting which are reversible or irreversible. Through experiments, we will observe how heating, cooling, or mixing can alter materials as well as exploring which materials make the most effective thermal and electrical conductors and insulators. We will also examine how material properties affect their use in everyday life.

In History we are continuing to learn about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. This term we are focusing on exploring local archaeological evidence from these periods, studying the significance of the evidence and what it tells us about people during that time in History. We will also be looking into the rise of early civilisations and examining the cultural and technological advances that shaped early human history.

In RE we are learning about Incarnation (from the Latin 'Carnis' meaning flesh) and answering the question Was Jesus the Messiah? Through this unit we will be exploring the prophecies about the Messiah and reflecting on differing views on Jesus as Messiah.

Be ready for learning! In Raven class your child will need to have these items in school:

  • PE kit (to be worn on Thursdays
  • Water bottle (no squash or juice)
  • Small rucksack (big enough to hold lunchbox and reading books)
  • Wellington boots (to leave in school)
  • Coat (weather appropriate)

Please don’t bring other items into school, as we do not have space to store these, and it can cause upset if things are lost or damaged.
