Falcon - Year 6

Hello! I am Mr Glancy and I teach Falcon class. I enjoy teaching all the subjects but some of my favourites are reading, writing and science. I love sharing with my class my joy of reading and I share all my favourite stories with them. I am very proud to be part of the teaching profession and a member of St John’s school.
At school I lead Reading which I am very passionate about. I am also lead of Partnerships which means I have an enjoyable role inviting guests into the school to give special lessons or organise events such as trips to the Kings School.
In my spare time I love to read, listen to music, go for days out with my wife and my two children and find nice places out to eat!
Other staff working in our class are:

Miss Cavalla - TA
Our weekly timetable:

Our learning this term
English:
In English this term we will be reading ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’. We will use this book to support our writing of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Our grammar and punctuation focus will be on revising key elements of basic punctuation and standard English grammar in our sentences. The book is a wonderful tale of a china rabbit who begins to learn about himself through a series of unexpected events. As always, please do not read this book at home until we are done so that we can share the reading experience together as a class.

Maths:
This term we will be focusing on fractions, learning how to calculate with them, finding equivalents, fractions of amounts as well as daily arithmetic opportunities. We will continue to develop the children’s understanding and fluency of these concepts through daily practise, as well as targeted reasoning and problem-solving challenges.

History:
This term we will be learning about World War II — how it started, what happened during the war, and how it changed people’s lives. We’ll find out about key events and important countries involved, including the Allies and the Axis Powers, and learn about what life was like for ordinary people during this time. We’ll discover how the Nazi party treated Jewish people unfairly, and how some children were rescued through the Kindertransport.
We’ll learn about the Battle of Britain and The Blitz, finding out why places in the south-east of England, like Canterbury, were bombed and how people coped. Using maps, photos, posters, diaries, and news reports, we’ll explore what life was really like on the Home Front — including rationing, air raids, and how communities helped each other.
Finally, we’ll look at how the war ended, why VE Day and VJ Day are still remembered today, and how the world changed afterwards, with new challenges and hopes for the future.

RE:
In RE this term we will exploring the big question, ‘What would Jesus do?’ We will be focusing on the Gospel texts, unpicking their meanings and considering what we can learn from them. This unit allows opportunities for self-reflection, where children can consider the power and consequences of their own choices.

Science:
In science, we will be studying ‘Animals Including Humans’. This will include learning about the main organs and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The children will be learning about the effect of exercise on the body, and the effects of harmful substances. They will be making blood and carrying out investigations to answer key questions.
