Hi, I'm Teacher Sample (they/them) and I teach Year 5 Kestrels. I'm so excited to be a part of this school for a fourth year.

I have lived and worked in Germany and China prior to working at St John's. This year, I have taken on the role of MFL lead as I have a passion for learning languages. I can speak German, Chinese and Spanish. I'm looking forward to teaching German as our school's MFL and to teach my class some Spanish during our South America topic.

As well as being a teacher, I like coffee, Lego, dinosaurs and Pokemon!

Our learning this term:

English: We are reading  There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom, a story about friendship, self awareness and school. In this unit, we will write letters, diary entries and a persuasive speech, which we hope to deliver to the rest of the class.

Maths: We are learning about place value and addition & subtraction, including numbers up to 1,000,000, writing numbers in words, column addition and subtraction, and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

Science: We are learning about Space, including the names of the planets, their orbits, the conditions on each planet, how and why Earth has night and day, how we can prove that the Earth is a sphere and space exploration missions.

Topic: We are starting a two-term History topic called "Stone Age to Iron Age". This begins with looking at nomadic people in Britain during the Stone Age; the resources they had and what their lives were like. We then look at how life change in Britain throughout the Bronze Age and Iron Age. We compare each part of this period of history with our own lives; asking enquiry questions and learning how to be a historian!

RE: We are studying Christianity and answering the big question: What does it mean if God is loving and holy? This includes looking at an overview of the Bible and finding how the concept of God fits into this. We will discuss what the concept of God means to us and look at how this is seen in the Christian faith, in particular examples of how the Christian God is both loving and holy. Finally, we will use the knowledge we have gained this term, alongside previous learning, to debate our big question.

German: We are learning to talk and write about our hobbies. We will learn how to say which hobbies we like and dislike, when we do them and how good we are at them.

Be ready for learning! In Kestrels, your child will need to have these items in school: 

• water bottle (no squash or juice) 
• small rucksack (big enough to hold lunch box and reading books) 
• wellington boots (to leave in school) 
• coat (weather appropriate) 

Please don’t bring other items to school, as we do not have space to store them, and it can cause upset if things are lost or damaged.
