We have recently had several parents question some of the register marks that their children have received.
They have queried where we have put an ‘O’ mark—this means that the child’s absence from school is unauthorised.
On several occasions it has turned out that children have been ill or actually been at medical appointments, which, if they were emergency appointments, would obviously receive an ‘M’ mark. This will affect the attendance percentage but is considered to be authorised by the Local Authority.
However, the confusion has arisen because parents have not informed the school office of the reason for absence and so we have marked it as unauthorised as we were not aware of the situation, and despite sending text messages asking to be updated have still not received a phone call.
This is important because if it happens on several occasions it can lead to poor attendance being reported to the Local Authority and possibly even fines being issued. Please make sure to inform the school office of the reason for your child’s absence every day that they are away.
