Inclusion and Welfare Team
At St John's we want to make sure that children are happy, secure and successful. Sometimes children or their families need extra help to make sure of this. There is a team of adults in school who organise and provide additional support for parents, carers and children.
Welcome to our Inclusion and Welfare page, I am Miss Pellant and my role is Head of Inclusion and Welfare. I work closely with our link SENCO Miss Berri and your child’s teachers to track your child’s progress in school and organise extra support if your child is falling behind. This support may be provided by adults in school or specialists from outside of school such as Speech and Language Therapists, The Specialist Teaching Service, School Nurse, Pediatrician and educational psychologists. If you think your child may need additional support or you are worried about your child’s progress please talk to the class teacher or make an appointment to with the office to see me.
I monitor the children’s attendance at school and meet regularly with the Attendance Assistant and the School Liason Officer from Kent County Council to discuss any concerns.
As part of my role I ensure that the children in and out of class who are having difficulties with behaviour, learning or need emotional needs get the right support.

Miss Minnett: SENCo and Class Teacher
As well as being a class teacher Miss Minnett is our Child In Care Coordinator, she ensures that Care plans across the school and case studies for key children are written and kept updated. In her SENCo role she is responsible for coaching teachers in key strategies to enable progress and success for our SEND children. She assists the class teachers in their provision maps, ensures the SEND provision in classes is of a high quality, writes EHC Plans, screens and assesses SEND children.
She liaises regularly with Miss Pellant and passes on information for any referrals that need completing.
Mrs Bucket: Mrs Buckett- EAL specialist, Teaching Assistant.
Mrs Buckett Supports key EAL children in personalising their learning either 1-1 or in small group support. She supports the children to become independent, co-operative and collaborative learners, giving them key strategies to use in class to help them succeed with their learning in a school where English is their second language.
Mrs Ball: Specialist Teaching Assistant of Speech and Language
Mrs Ball helps to nurture the social and academic development of key children who need individual and small group support with communication and Speech and Language.
Mrs Pellant: Family Liaison Officer
Mrs Pellant provides lots of support for families and children and can help you to access local services such as children centres, Early Help, parenting courses and a listening ear. She also runs social skills groups at lunchtime for Foundation Stage and KS1 children. She helps set up exciting activities for children and their families such as the Easter Bonnet parade, coffee mornings, firework night, Christmas fair, summer fair and lots more. Mrs Pellant and/or other members of staff will always be at the school gate at the beginning and end of the day, so please talk to them if you want to talk about your child.
Mrs Wallace: Mrs Wallace organises the weekly School Council and runs social skills groups for KS2 at lunchtimes.
Shirley Mearing: Creative Arts and Non Directive Play Therapist,
PTUK Clinical Supervision Cert, Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Diploma Kent University
You will find Shirley every Friday in the bubble room or out and about around the school giving advice and strategies to staff, meeting with parents/carers or running staff training. Our latest staff training from Shirley was about building resilience and independence in the children, attachment theory and ways we can help the children build in confidence to ensure our children are emotionally and socially ready to succeed in life in whatever they chose to be.
Shirley Mearing is a qualified, registered, Creative Arts and Play Therapist, and Clinical Supervisor, having gained both qualifications with Play Therapy UK (PTUK). She is a member of the register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists which is managed by PTUK and accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. Shirley specializes in Sand Tray Therapy and holds a Diploma in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies gained from Kent University. Shirley brings with her many years’ experience of working with children, young people and their families from within the health, education, social care and voluntary sectors.
Creative Arts and Non Directive Play Therapy is person centered with play and metaphor being the primary medium. The dynamic process that takes place between child and Play Therapist from within a trusting, safe, relationship enables the child to explore issues past and present, conscious and unconscious and uses the child’s inner resources to bring about growth and change. A variety of mediums is on offer to the child to choose from including puppets, imaginative play, creative visualization, therapeutic story, music, Mandala’s, clay, sand, paint, and other creative arts materials.
She is a Filial coach and work with families to build positive relationships. Filial works with children and parents/carers and is an attachment and relationship focused intervention based in play that helps improve and build positive sustained family relationships.
