Early Years

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Caterpillars Nursery at St John’s is open weekdays during term time with morning, afternoon and full day sessions available. Our morning session runs from 8.30am to 11.30am and the afternoon is from 12.00pm to 3.00pm. Your child can attend for a combination of morning and afternoon sessions or full days if you prefer. You can use all or part of your 15 hours free entitlement with us and if available, further sessions can be purchased. We also have limited spaces for two year olds. Please contact the school office on 01227 462360 for further information.

At Caterpillars Nursery the children are offered a wide range of exciting learning opportunities based upon their interests and ideas. The children are able to learn both indoors and outside as they have free flow between the two areas. We also love to explore the local area and have recently been to feed the ducks and visit the local supermarket. Each week we enjoy Forest School activities which allow us to learn in a natural environment and love going on welly walks to explore the school field and nature area.

At St John’s we have two reception classes, Butterfly Class and Honeybee Class. In reception the children continue to learn through play both indoors and outdoors. We are very busy learning lots of new skills including phonics and handwriting. We enjoy daily phonics sessions and activities developing writing skills in a pre-cursive script. We have our own individual Learning Journeys which we love to share with each other and our families. These have lots of photographs in them which show you all the exciting things we have been doing.

Our learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage is based upon 7 Areas of Learning & Development:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Underpinning learning and development across all these areas are the Characteristics of Effective Learning (how children learn) which include playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage we have an open door policy so please speak to a member of staff in the morning or after school if there is anything you wish to discuss. For more information on the Early Years Foundation Stage please click here.
